Viewing the Olympics as a family offers even more value by strengthening family bonds, creating positive memories, and even lowering stress levels, according to Nona Kocher, MD, a board-certified psychiatrist at Quintessence Psychiatry in Miami.

Sharing an emotional experience that is playing out right then and there offers kids more than an opportunity to snicker at mom getting misty-eyed over a segment about another parent’s countless early morning drives to the ice rink with their athlete.

According to Kathy Wu, PhD, families who engage in rituals like watching the Olympics together are supporting emotional regulation and resilience. “From a brain-based perspective, this emotional synchrony strengthens connection and reinforces a child’s sense of belonging and emotional safety,” says Dr. Wu. Meanwhile, the Olympics offer countless themes with real-world applications parents can discuss with kids while they watch. Positive attributes like perseverance, discipline, and teamwork are on full display during the Games… kids are also being exposed to themes of national pride and collective identity.
