In an upgrade to Teen Accounts, the platform will alert parents if their teen searches for terms related to suicide or self-harm repeatedly within a short window of time.

In the past, Instagram has blocked search results and redirected users to mental health resources instead. This takes it a step further by alerting parents to their child’s online search activity within the platform. It’s important as teens are in a mental health crisis.

“We understand how sensitive these issues are, and how distressing it could be for a parent to receive an alert like this,” Sophie Vogel, Meta spokesperson, tells Parents. “While the vast majority of teens don’t try to search for suicide and self-harm content on Instagram, we want to make sure parents are aware if their teen is repeatedly trying to search for this content, and that they feel empowered with the resources they need to support their teen.”

In order not to flag every single search, Meta says it consulted experts from its internal Suicide and Self-Harm Advisory Group to set a threshold for the number of searches within a given period that would trigger an alert. The company acknowledges that this may include some alerts that are not actually a cause for concern, but feels confident in this starting point, which can be adjusted based on future user feedback.
