Children—preschool through high school age—are beginning to feel that end-of-school-year malaise for real. It’s like we are just going through the motions, trying to get to the finish line, with just a weeks left until summer break where we live. It seems so close and yet so far away.

“It’s common for kids to lose motivation as the school year winds down,” says Laurie Kopp Weingarten, president and chief educational consultant at One-Stop College Counseling. “They’ve been pushing for months—academically, socially, and emotionally—and by spring, they’re often exhausted.”

“This is where family leadership really matters and remembering that you don’t have to be running on full energy, you just have to show up with presence,” Ramos says.

He advises parents to just be honest about where they are at. For instance, you might tell your family that you are struggling, too—and also acknowledge their exhaustion. The support can go a long way.

Reminding kids that the end is in sight can help. Carrig would just add that focusing on the present shouldn’t get lost in the countdown to summer. “This tends to get the child focused on just riding out the year and getting onto something better, rather than making the best of the time they have left of the school year,” she says.
