Parents are asking their teens not to go out with friends two weekends in a row, or two nights in a row. Not because we hate fun and hate to see them have fun. Instead, caretakers aim to help their kids balance social commitments with family time, as well as their health and overall well-being.
Sharon L. Adusei, PhD, Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Clinical Strategy Manager at Modern Health, confirms the sentiment behind the “two-weekend rule” underscores an important aspect of teen well-being: balancing social activities and family time.
“While research hasn’t specifically studied this rule, we know that a balanced lifestyle and strong family relationships have profound positive impacts on teens’ mental and physical health,” she tells Parents.
Dr. Crain advises reframing the rule as a tool for balance rather than a restriction. Proceeding with caution may be best, so your teen doesn’t rebel against what they perceive as a limitation.
