Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg says his new alien thriller Disclosure Day explores a question that has fascinated humanity for generations: What would the discovery of extraterrestrial life mean for faith?
The filmmaker told CBS Sunday Morning that the film, which opens this weekend, examines how people respond as evidence of intelligent life beyond Earth begins to emerge. Among the questions at the center of the story, Spielberg said, are the theological implications of alien life on Earth.
Disclosure Day follows a television meteorologist and a government whistleblower whose lives become intertwined after evidence of extraterrestrial life begins to surface.
“The movie also takes the position of the church,” Spielberg said. “What does this do to the fundamental beliefs that many of us have? And you know: Is God our God only on this planet, or is God a God for every system where there’s civilization, intelligent life, and even developing life?”
“The movie … wrestles with the theological stakes. Would the existence of aliens disprove God?” Sopo wrote on X. “Citing Scripture, a sympathetic Christian character answers plainly: no.”
And, in a happy spoiler, Sopo also said Christianity and the Church are portrayed positively throughout the film.
