David, the animated musical from Angel Studios, debuted at No. 2 at the box office this weekend, bringing in an estimated $22 million domestically.
The new film features music by worship artist Phil Wickham, who also voices the Old Testament king. This weekend’s opening marks Angel’s biggest theatrical debut to date and the highest-grossing faith-based animated opening ever.
Notably, this is the second time Angel has pulled off that feat this year. Back in April, the studio’s release of the animated film The King of Kings, featuring Oscar Isaac as Jesus, previously held the record before David surpassed it. Together, the two films now sit among the top-grossing animated theatrical releases of the year.
