Gen Z grew up online. Now they’re actively choosing to unplug.

A new study from Talker Research found that 63% of Gen Z intentionally disconnect from their devices, the highest rate of any generation surveyed. Millennials follow at 57%, Gen X at 42% and baby boomers trail at 29%. The generation that was handed smartphones before driver’s licenses is also the most eager to put them down.

The shift fits into a broader rejection of constant acceleration. Two-thirds of Americans say they plan to embrace “slow living” in 2026, prioritizing quality over speed. When people want time away from screens, they choose face-to-face conversations, outdoor activities, hands-on hobbies and reading. More than three-quarters say they’ve come to value the offline world more as they’ve gotten older.
