In the year since launching Teen Accounts, Instagram received backlash from parents and experts who believe the built-in protections were not doing enough to protect young users from inappropriate content. An October 2025 report from Heat Initiative and ParentsTogether Action found more than half of teens reported still seeing unsafe content and unwanted messages.

Instagram, which is owned by Meta, is responding to these concerns by announcing, on October 14, 2025, that PG-13 movie rating standards will now guide Teen Accounts.
