The most important thing parents can do to support their teens’ healthy New Year’s resolutions is to understand their “why,” according to experts.
Courtney Pelitera, MS, RD, CNSC at Live It Up, prompts parents to find out if their child was influenced by social media or friends to create new exercise and nutrition goals—did it come from wanting to look a certain way, or just be healthy?
Parents should also be mindful that the word “healthy” can have different meanings, especially for teens, according to Lauren Hartman, MD, double board-certified in adolescent medicine and pediatrics.
“I see a lot of concerning advice on social media from unlicensed individuals promoting practices that are actually harmful,” Dr. Hartman warns.
Modeling science-based healthy habits for your teen, or even taking part in achieving sound nutrition and fitness goals along with them, are great ways to lend support, according to Kathy Wu, PhD, the author of The Self-Regulation Handbook for Teens & Young Adults.
