Nearly one-third of all adolescents across the country have prediabetes, putting them at risk of more serious health complications later in life, according to new estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The new estimates, which used data from the CDC’s National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, found that 8.4 million youth ages 12 through 17 had prediabetes in 2023, representing 32.7% of the country’s adolescent population.
Prediabetes is a condition in which patients have blood sugar levels higher than normal, but not high enough for a type 2 diabetes diagnosis.
The condition puts patients at an increased risk of experiencing serious long-term health issues, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke, according to the CDC.
The report notes that the CDC only released a brief summary of their findings, but did not provide the raw data or a peer-reviewed paper to explain how it reached its findings.
